Messages From Commanders

Commander – November 2016

My fellow legionaires, I have been elected to serve as your Post Commander. First of all, I want to thank our past commander, Jack Smith, for the great job he has done for us for the last 2 years. With the help of our newly elected officers we will follow in the direction Jack has started us on and that is to respond to the needs of our veterans and to our community, as the new in commander, and Jack as out going commander, we both requested an internal audit of our financial statements for post 246, this was done on August 29th, 2016. Everything was in great order, and I want to thank Dale for the great job he is doing for out post. we are fast approaching the holidays, and I want to remind everyone on Thanksgiving to pause to give thanks for what you have. I want to wish everone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

God Bless America

Commander – July 2015

I have been elected to serve another year (2016) as your Post Commander. Since June of 2014 we have pursued a policy designed to separate us from a Post Home that is too large and too expensive for us to maintain. Through volunteers efforts and much support from our members, we have been able to tread water. We must now face the reality that volunteerism can only go so far. To date we have worked with two realtors to try and find a fit for our facility. We have not been able to do so. We are now working with an auction company to reach out to other potential purchasers. We are working to get a fair market price for our Post. The specifics were discussed at our June membership meeting and approved by the membership as presented by our Executive Board. Volunteers will be needed this summer as never before. Please consider helping us. Contact me at 309-236-4163 so that we can schedule necessary work details.

Installation of Post Officers will be at 1900 hours on Monday, July 27, 2015. Moline VFW Post 2153 is providing their home for the installation Ceremony. Please attend if you can and meet your fellow American Legion Officers and members.

God bless all of you and your families

Commander – April 2015

Where did the time go? A lot has happened this past year. Too much to itemize but not so much that I can’t say that I am a better person for having been your Commander.

A slate of officers, developed by our Executive Board, will be presented at the April membership meeting. Now is the time to attend that meeting and nominate other competent Post members to compete for these offices.

Competition is important so that we can build on our strengths. We have different management styles but that dose not keep us from working as a close unit. Whatever the outcome, no current officer will give less than 100% support to the new officers.

God bless all of you and your families.

Commander – January 2015

We are phasing out our printed newsletter. Printing and mailing is becoming too expensive. Our last printed newsletter will be in the spring of 2015. All newsletters after that will only be accessible online.

RUHL COMMERCIAL will handle the sale of our Post home. Over the past few months we have made several improvements designed to make our property more marketable. These include repairs to our roof, basement and office areas. We have reduced our expenses to a manageable level. Some expenses we have postponed until closing. These include lawyer fees, CPA fees and VVA loan. Where do we go from here? We can continue to use the VFW facilities for only so long. Do we purchase, lease or rent? Do we stay in Moline? What considerations do we have to take into accounts with each of these options? More questions than answers. Come to your membership meetings and let your voice be heard.

God bless America

Commander – September 2014

WANTED!!! Working groups to help put our Post home in useable condition. We do not need any more committees. We need action oriented American Legion members.

We are in a negotiating phase with our current Broker which looks like it will take some time before we can show solid progress.

Let’s don’t sit and wait. Let’s move forward.

If you can be responsible for cleaning a room or maintaining an area of our facility, let me know. The details can be worked out. I will be responsible for keeping the Honor Guard’s lavatory (head/latrine)¬†clean.

Join a work group to look at alternate uses for our Post home. Such as opening it up to groups to use for special events. We currently have two organizations interested. Think outside the box for other possible uses.

Join a fund raising work group. Activities such as assisting at the Bix7, Deere Classic, I Wireless Center, and Modern Woodman Stadium are possibilities. If you can contribute as little as one hour would be helpful. I can donate four hours for a chosen event.

Please give one of these three groups serious consideration. Let me know of your availability at 3092364163 or

If you do not get involved you will be a watcher. “One of those cold timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.”
